Artificial intelligence & algorithms: pros & cons | DW Documentary (AI documentary)

  • Published: 26 September 2019
  • Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to fundamental changes in the way we live. Algorithms can already detect Parkinson's disease and cancer, and control both cars and aircraft. How will AI change our society in the future?

This documentary journeys to the hot spots of AI research in Europe, the USA and China, and looks at the revolutionary developments which are currently taking place. The rapid growth of AI offers many opportunities, but also many dangers. AI can be used to create sound and video recordings which will make it more and more difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction. It will make the world of work more efficient and many professions superfluous. Algorithms can decide whether to grant loans, who is an insurance risk, and how good employees are. But there is a huge problem: humans can no longer comprehend how algorithms arrive at their decisions. And another big problem is AI’s capacity for widespread surveillance. The Chinese city of Rongcheng is already using an AI-supported 'social credit system' to monitor and assess its citizens. Does AI pose a danger to our personal freedoms or democracy? Which decisions can we leave to the algorithms - and which do we want to? And what are AI’s social implications?

A documentary by Tilman Wolff und Ranga Yogeshwar

39:13 definitely the old woman crossing illegally. Without even second thinking. Traffic rules are there to protect you and your lives, break it and you will be punished, sometimes by money, and sometimes by your own life. Why should drivers and passengers pay for someone who is endangering them all.

Just who would buy a car that prioritizes the lives of others over the passenger? I think the company that tries to sell a product like that will go bankrupt very quickly.

There has always been a delicate balance with freedom and security. The more security, the less freedom and vice versa. China (as a communist country) has opted for total security, no freedom and I think with the rise of Google the western civilization is slipping towards that as well. There is so much going on behind the scenes that public does not know about. From time to time we get these scandalous leaks what is really going on there and it seems Google (just like China) wants total control. If we cannot rein in these companies, they will eventually be (or already are) more powerful than the biggest nations. We will be ruled over by the wealthiest and the most powerful 1% of the population and no longer have any say in the matter. We should do something while we still have democracy and some semblance of freedom left to us.

Dude, no one is going to buy a car that might sacrifice the owner just to save two jaywalking women.

                                            1. I bought a brand new autonomous car.
                                            2. Two bimbos are jaywalking.
                                            3. My car decided to drove me into a lamppost and kill me.

This will impoverish social life for all of us, because people need to have benign and meaningful interactions with other people. Getting a cup of coffee from Starbucks is as much about human interaction with other humans as it is about getting a caffeine fix. AI may be able to meet all human physical needs but will it meet human emotional needs and social needs? If we are ever going to create a decent democratic society, we must interact with other people and not just machines. AI is creating a totalitarian society in which we are all under constant state surveillance. This is Orwell's 1984 on steroids. If you are not very, very worried, then you are not paying attention!

I think technology is great, AI is even great, so long as it is never connected to the internet, and is never allowed to self program. Also a humans personal identity should be between him an his creator. There is no legitimate reason for any human to be required to permanently enter into such a condition of servitude with any other authority, except as a slave to a beast like system in the end.

I've even heard it said that willingly accepting this mark of a beast-like authority on ones life is the ultimate unforgivable sin. In the end it is a knowledge of good and evil that only works if it is applicable to everyone or else. It amounts to utter and complete slavery for the entire human race, which of course will be abused without fail. And on the current course, will lead to the death of mankind. Hasn't this been common knowledge for thousands of years now?.

So why are we still living in the proverbial Garden Of Eden?. We know where this deception leads. Its not hardly even debatable, if you understand the history of civilization, governments and the exploitation of the masses. Oh but it will be different this time when we give total control to our governments? No in reality you get freedom when the governing authorities fear the people, and tyranny when the people fear their leaders.

If Hitler had done what China is doing with the same level of technology, the entire world would now speak German for the next thousand years and anyone who had a problem with it would get Cybernetic implants to help them with their mental illness.

I think King David was one of the first in modern civilization to number or identify his people, and it was considered a great sin. But it offers such great apparent face value convenience that no government since has attempted to do anything else. Instead they destroy, conquer, or liberate any culture that might even consider it. But don't say stuff like this online or you may be listed as a problem that needs addressed for presenting uncomfortable truths that make waves. There are many ways to punish a commodity that doesn't want to blindly get exploited. The attitude I see these days is. "You don't need privacy if you have nothing to hide, and you don't need free speech if you have nothing bad to say". Meanwhile your like a frog being slowly, happily, and cluelessly, or helplessly boiled in water.
