During my life i have bought several used cars, mostly returned cars from dealerships, these are cars with 1.000 to 4.000 miles in the odo. People returned them because they didn´t like them, or they had ratltes or noises that were not solved by the dealership service. Usually 30% to 40% chaper than new.

Motor vehicle fatality per 100,000 population in the year 1998 was 15.36%

Motor vehicle fatality per 100,000 population in the year 2018 was 11.18%

If safety is a concern, get a bus pass. Or a tank.

Problem with newer cars is a lot of them all look stupid or similar and too many features and plastic everywhere and cant work on them yourself. What we need is older styling with modern safety features and minimalist high quality interiors

One more thing, you say you don't have biases about cars. Uhhhh.... you're definitely biased to German makes and models for whatever reason.

One or two year old cars have virtually the same tech, so you don't lose all the money on the up front depreciation. All the autonomy of the cars aren't for safety, it's for control. My honest opinion.

Great take on new vs new. I'm in the budget group. Get a used car and am willing to repair some stuff myself for cheaper than a mechanic. I guess we're in the minority. Collegues of mine are the type who just pay more for a newer car, and trade it in for a newer one before it has a problem. I kind of wish I was "them" but from a cash point of view, my method works for me. Repairing my coolant system as I type this. Well, not right now... My hands are full of antifreeze. Thanks for another great video.

The nuance Mr. DeMuro doesn't account for is that almost all modern cars are equipped with the feature of death (automatic transmission) that wants to kill you or put you to sleep. Almost all post ABS/traction control safety features are trying to mitigate the situations automatic transmissions put you in. If you have a 10 year old car with a manual you are safer than a new vehicle with an automatic and tons of safety features. The truth is modern vehicles and all their tech are distraction machines.

So my friend's office is next to a Ford dealership. Some years back the Blackwood pickup trucks didn't sell, so to liquidate they dropped the price and he bought a new one for $25k. It was an awful truck. It got poor gas mileage and its tank wasn't big so you had to fill up after 200 miles. It had showboat lights filling the bed so it was a pickup truck that couldn't carry stuff. It had lots of power so you had to be careful to not give it gas on corners or the rear end would set loose. But whenever we went shopping, when we returned to the truck there were women looking at it like they needed one more than a dozen pair of nice shoes. That is the vehicle Mr. DeMuro considers buying?

The first owner of my wife's 2016 rav4 with 20k miles lost $150 of value every time they filled the fuel tank.

This is something that no one talks about. It is such a nice feeling knowing you have blind spot detection, forward collision warning, airbags in the car where it's needed. A few of those features has saved my life. Having a modern car will always be a huge advantage.

Everybody are always so concerned about car safety. With healthcare in US if I get into serious accident, it better be fatal. So lack of safety is a plus for me.

I think you can get a safer 10 year old, 60,000 mile, used car for $7,000 than you would new for the same price.

Assuming apples and oranges, buy the better things. But if your budget can't stretch then a ugly, unpopular model can give you a lot of bang for your buck in the used market.

My V35 (G35) looks uglier than a brick. Gets me from A-B safely and quickly though. 10/10 would put a paper bag over again.

My wife is the same but I’m the only one that’ll look at an old AMG and say “I want that” and in some ways you can get away with the safety features because Mercedes is usually the first to have them way longer than other males but you’ll have to have deep pockets if it breaks but that’s part of the charm.

A 5 year old Lexus is not going to give you headaches. $45,000 is a ridiculous amount of money to throw in the trash. This applies to all makes and models.

A used car has many risks. I'm in the process of getting myself my first car and the risks that come with it are making me gravitate towards a new one.

The only true argument for used cars is depreciation.

I mean, the point of a car is to get you from A to B at your own convinience. The convinience is what you're paying for....for the extra amount you pay for in a new car, you get peace of mind, warranty, manufacture guarantee, a product that you get to maintain by yourself. That is worth it.

Certified pre-owned covers the warranty but that too is for a shorter time frame.

Anyone who buys that does so because they don't have a choice, not because it's the smarter financial decision...

Only downside, you can't specify the options you want. You are stuck with what is available. Want a blue 5.0 Mustang auto with adaptive cruise control and leather? Sorry, none available in your town.
